How much foreskin do you have?

That's a difficult question to answer unless you have a scale to measure foreskins by.

If you've been circumcised you might say "none", but some men's circumcision removed more of their foreskin than others. So what you think is none might be quite a lot to somebody more heavily circumcised than yourself. Natural (uncut) foreskins vary considerably between one man and another. Some uncut men have very little foreskin and may appear to be circumcised, others have a very long foreskin.

With the Coverage Index you can quantify how much foreskin you have no matter whether you're circumcised or natural.

The Coverage Index is based on the amount of foreskin coverage a penis has. It ranges from virtually none (predominantly men who have been heavily circumcised) through to very long (predominantly uncut penises with very long foreskins). It has been designed so every man on earth can use this index to determine his CI number.

Because many circumcised penises appear to have the same amount of foreskin when erect (i.e. none) and many uncut penises appear to have the same amount of foreskin when soft (i.e. a large amount) it was necessary to develop an index that takes foreskin coverage in both the erect and soft states into account. When determining your CI number consider the amount of foreskin you normally have when soft and normally have when erect. Discount times when you are cold, have been exercising or taking medications such as viagra.

Simple anatomy of the penis

The Coverage Index chart uses photos and descriptions to help men determine their CI number. The descriptions make reference to various parts of the penis, so I have labeled them on this picture to avoid any confusion.

Using the Coverage Index

Step 1 "When soft"

Look down the "When Soft" column of the Coverage Index (below) to find the photo which most closely resembles the amount of foreskin you normally have when soft. Read the caption under the photo to confirm that it is the one that best describes you. On the left side of the photo is a CI number, note it down.

Don't make the comparison if you are cold, have been swimming, in a hot tub or bath, exercising or taking medications or drugs. Wait until you are back to normal before making the determination.

Step 2 "When hard"

Look down the "When Hard" column of the Coverage Index (below) to find the photo which most closely resembles the amount of foreskin you normally have when erect. Read the caption under the photo to confirm that it is the one that best describes you. Look to the far left column and note the CI number.

Don't make the comparison if you have been taking medications or drugs or have experienced conditions which change your normal erection.

Step 3 Determine your CI number

When Soft
When Hard

CI-1

When soft there is no loose skin on the shaft of the penis

When hard the shaft skin is very tight and on some men draws the scrotum up

CI-2

When soft there is some loose skin which wrinkles over the sulcus

When hard the shaft skin is tight

CI-3

When soft foreskin covers the sulcus and just touches the corona

When hard there may be very slight wrinkling of the shaft skin

CI-4

When soft foreskin covers the corona leaving most of the glans exposed

When hard there is some wrinkling of the shaft shin behind the sulcus

CI-5

When soft a half to two-thirds of the glans is exposed

When hard foreskin wrinkles over the sulcus

CI-6

When soft the foreskin covers most of the glans

When hard the foreskin retracts behind the corona

CI-7

When soft the glans is completely covered with the glans visible through the opening

When hard foreskin covers the corona and some of the glans

CI-8

When soft there is a small amount of overhanging foreskin

When hard the foreskin covers over half of the glans

CI-9

When soft foreskin overhangs the end of the glans

When hard the foreskin completely covers the glans but there is no overhang

CI-10

When soft there is a considerable amount of overhanging foreskin

When hard the foreskin still overhangs the end of the glans

Exceptions

As a standard rule of nature there will always be some exceptions. In the case of the Coverage Index men in the situations listed below will need to use some judgment when determining their CI numbers. It must be noted however that their CI will only be affected by 1 or 2 points.

  • men whose penises "grow" considerably more than average when becoming erect,
  • men whose penises hardly "grow" at all when becoming erect,
  • men whose foreskins do not move freely due to large diameter glans (penis heads), foreskin tightness, or a short frenulum which restricts free foreskin movement (see below).
  • men with very long glans.

More Information

The Coverage Index was originally developed as a progress measurement tool for men undergoing foreskin restorations. If you are interested in foreskin restoration and issues relating to foreskins click either of the links below. The first link contains general information and an overview of one man's foreskin restoration experience. (This may be where you came from if you clicked a link in the Flash console or on the NewForeskin home page).

The second link is for people interested in becoming a member (free) of NewForeskin - a comprehensive web site which explains in detail one man's experience of foreskin restoration. He has included a great deal of foreskin restoration information, observations, and opinions. It has 10 sections and over 120 photos, graphics, charts, animations and diagrams. The site is growing all of the time as new information is added and discoveries are made. To become a member click the NewForeskin Member's site link for details.
